Cockblock: Overview
An extremely high powered, high caliber rifle used by Wyroks for intercepting incoming missiles, rockets and artillery shells. When fielded by multiple Wyroks as part of a defensive squadron, the Cockblock is capable of destroying 400+ incoming projectiles per minute. If used against an ICBM that’s within or above the Thermosphere, a chain array of Wisps and an off-site computational source is required to ensure a precise interception.
I don’t know how this name got approved, but I am so goddamn glad it did.
Normally you’d never need to worry about bombardments, missile strikes or
anything of that nature while you’re on-post at any GDS base. We’ve got
enough defenses to ensure the enemy will deplete their ammo budget before
they even get close to hitting us, but sometimes those defenses are absent
due to it being a new base, a FOB, an outpost, a campsite or whatever.
There’s a few solutions to that, and one of them is having cover provided by
the good ol’ Cockblock.
Much like the fat chick that prevents you from talking to her pretty friend at the bar, the BIR-2 “Cockblock” prevents enemy bombardments from fucking us. But unlike the pretty girl, we actually don’t want to get fucked in this case. And the cockblocking is welcome, not some annoyance we have to put up with because we felt bad leaving our friend at the apartment by herself, but then she does this shit because seeing us get some makes her feel even more lonely, so we tell her to maybe try working on herself and she’s like “Ugh no, they should like me for who I am, not what I look like”. But we’re like “Sweetie, I get that but people appreciate someone who looks like they care about themselves, you need to put in some effort” but she’s all “Ugh you wouldn’t get it, you’re all just naturally beautiful” despite the fact my ass is in the gym five days a week. Girl, do you think I got this ass and these abs by staring at a fucking wall until my body naturally became that? How ‘bout you ditch that attitude, put down that bag of powdered doughnuts and take a fucking shower for once before I slap the bitch off your face?
That’s a good metaphorical summary for the Cockblock. What the hell is wrong with you? – Iza
So why did we make this?
Well it’s a good way to have a highly mobile, highly adaptable
anti-ballistics response when you’ve got a force on the move. You can gain
ground a lot faster when you don’t need to spend every night setting up and
calibrating countermeasures before everyone is allowed to bust out their
FRNs. True, there are systems that can be towed behind any common truck
that can do the job, but we feel far more comfortable if a far more mobile
and nimble Wyrok is the one providing defense to our Vanguard and Armored
Legion squadrons.
The usual scenario is that some sort of detachment, expeditionary force or
supply run is on the move or setting up camp when intel and their DFD
systems show an incoming strike. If a Wyrok with a Cockblock is part of
their escort, it’ll immediately link up with any nearby Wisps to track
incoming projectiles before opening fire. Since this is a suppressed 240mm
rifle we don’t have to worry all that much about the ill effects that’d
have on everyone below, so they can remain in position. Assuming they have
their helmets on, so if you find yourself in that situation… move fast.
The second that Wyrok gets into a stabilization position and you hear those
muscles tensing, you’d better be pulling that shit onto your head before the
tinnitus gods pay you a visit.
Anyhow, the Wyrok takes up position, takes aim and begins picking off any
incoming whatevers one shot at a time. This is better than spraying an
absolute wall of PTT rounds since it’s cheaper and ensures we don’t have
collateral damage when the 5000 plasmatic bullets that didn’t hit anything
start raining down on some poor unsuspecting village. We could make the
bullets detonate after a certain flight time but… fuuuuuuuuuck using that
as a mainstay defense would get expensive and logistically annoying.
Not a fan of neutralizing 3 artillery shells with 10,000 rounds of ammo.
I’m always a fan of efficiency, and the Cockblock is just a pure shining
example of that. Not only can PTT rounds take out artillery shells on a 1:1
basis, but it can detonate an ICBM before it even has a chance to begin its
descent. Shit in the right conditions, it can take one out before it hits
its apex.
Admittedly, that takes a bit of prep work to make happen and it can’t
exactly be done as a spur of the moment type deal. We’ve got a lot of far
better countermeasures when it comes to missiles, so the Cockblock is more
of a “We’ll use it if we have to” type deal when it comes to
serious missile defense. I say that because it requires having a few Wisps
chained together to relay the missile’s location back to the Wyrok and
provide enhanced sensor range, and then the calculations for the shot have
to be handled by some dedicated processing system. They wanted to build one
into the Wyrok as a part that can be equipped in tandem with the Cockblock,
but couldn’t justify the costs versus using a system that’s already made
for just that occasion.
When it happens though, it’s a thing of beauty.
You’ll see the Wyrok kneel down, shoulder the Cockblock, and just pause as
it starts receiving and sending an overwhelming amount of targeting data.
Remember that this is a PTT round, a dumb piece of plasmatic coated
tungsten, it isn’t a guided missile or any of that shit. They gotta
calculate the speed of the missile, the rotation of the planet, the wind,
the air friction, gravity, all kinds of wild shit that I’m glad isn’t my
responsibility.
End result; the Wyrok fires, you get hit by a huge blast of concussive
force, and then look up to see a teal tracer hit escape velocity. A few
seconds later, you see a massive flash of light and a tiny, miniscule puff
of smoke from where that PTT round just detonated a cluster missile in the
Thermosphere.
Lemme say, if the Intelligence Legion offered the ability to listen to enemy comms at that moment for a one-time fee, I’d be dumping out my wallet into their hands.
